Wasps and boxelder bugs

Wasps in summer, boxelder bugs in fall

Wasps build all summer, and boxelder and stink bugs gather on warm walls in fall. Both are treated from outside, and both are easier early.

Signs you have it

  • A gray paper nest under an eave, in a shed or inside a hollow wall

  • Wasps flying a steady line to one spot on the house

  • Clusters of black and red bugs on a sunny wall or a window frame in September

  • Bugs behind curtains and in window sills through winter

What we do

Four steps, in this order

  1. 01

    Inspect

Eaves, sheds, fences, vents and the south and west walls.

  2. 02

    Identify

Paper wasp, yellowjacket or something else, because it changes how we do it.

  3. 03

    Treat

Nests treated from a distance, in protective gear. Walls treated on the outside.

  4. 04

    Prevent

Screens, gaps and the lights and habits that draw them in.

Your part

Before and after the visit

  • Before

    • Keep children and pets away from the area until we say it's fine to go back

    • Don't spray a nest yourself; a disturbed nest is how most stings happen

  • After

    • Close windows facing the treated walls during the visit

    • Vacuum the bugs inside and bin the bag; don't crush them

Questions about this one

Can you take down the nest?

We treat the nest; whether to knock it down depends on where it is. We say what we'd do in the estimate.

Will the boxelder bugs be gone for good?

No treatment promises that. We treat the walls they gather on and seal the ways in, and most homes see far fewer.

What if the pests come back?

If the pest we treated for returns within 60 days of a visit, call us and we come back and treat again at no extra charge. It covers the pest named in your report and the areas we treated. It doesn't cover new pests, an entry point we flagged that hasn't been sealed, or a visit we couldn't finish because we couldn't get in.
